This question was received recently:
Hi, I own a 2000 AU TE50 200Kw manual sedan that I recently purchased in a private sale and it has developed a rumbling noise coming from the front area of the engine. Would you have any idea what may be causing this noise? The car is running fine and does not seem any different than normal. I’d like to have some idea before I go to a Dealer and get ripped off or something.
Thanks
Seth, TE50.
Hi Seth,
There are many components that can create rumbling noises in an engine, however noisy roller bearings are the the most common. At the front of the TE50 engine there is a single drive belt driven by the crankshaft harmonic balancer/pulley. This belt drives the Alternator, Water Pump, Power Steering Pump and Air Conditioning Compressor. It also has a couple of idler and a tension adjustment pulleys. All the mentioned components have roller bearings of some description in them. To determine where the noise is coming from can be achieved by elimination. Sometimes a stethoscope can be used but usually it is best to remove the drive belt and turn each component by hand with a lateral force to find the noisy component. You didn’t say how many kilometres your vehicle has traveled but with the engine running I would suspect an Alternator bearing if the noise is near the drivers side at the top, Power Steering Pump if top passenger side or Water Pump and other components if the noise is low down. If A/C Compressor is faulty you will hear the noise louder when the Air Conditioning is turned on. Colcam.
