Great Ocean Road 75 Years Celebration Tour

Cambo, Sunday November 25, 2007.

40 vintage cars participating in the Great Ocean Road 75 Years Celebration Tour left Melbourne today on a 4 day tour that will finish at Portland, Victoria.

They are re-enacting the original Great Ocean Road opening tour of 1932. Organisers had hoped to secure some vehicle entries from the original tour, but none could be found.

These 40 vehicles of yesteryear, all pre-1933, celebrate the history of Victoria’s greatest and most-spectacular scenic road, and the communities along its route.

Great Ocean Road Trust

Construction of the Great Ocean Road first started in September 1919 when the Premier of Victoria, Sir Harry Lawson detonated an explosive charge near Lorne. Built by 3,000 returned soldiers from World War One, the road was completed in 1932, joining at Apollo Bay with Country Roads Board sections to extend all the way to Warrnambool.

When Alderman Howard Hitchcock, the then mayor of Geelong and head of the Great Ocean Road Trust established the concept of the Great Ocean Road, it actually started at Barwon Heads and went through to Warrnambool. Over more recent times the Great Ocean Road was extended to Portland, the finishing point for the Tour.

Lone Ford

Among the participants is a lone Ford. A rare 1924 Ford Model ‘T’ 3 Door (no drivers side door), owned and driven by Geofrey Baulch.

The 3 door design, without a drivers door, is original. The car is khaki green with a white pinstripe all the way around the top of the body. The guards ,valance panels and running boards are black. The hood is cream coloured canvas. All colours are original as taken from the body and remaining hood remnants. It originally ran on Leaded Petrol, but is now run on Unleaded with an additive for lubrication.

“I have restored it to as close as possible to original”

“My car was purchased new by my Great Grandfather in 1924 in Hamilton (Victoria) and driven in the Cavendish/Hamilton area.” said Geofrey.

“My father aquired it from his uncle in 1967, who then gave it to me to restore in 1992.”

“I have restored it to as close as possible to original”, he said. “It has no drivers door, which is rare, and is a one-family owned car from new.”

“From the start it has taken 3 yrs of which about only 2 yrs was work and 12 months thinking about it. It cost about $18,000 to restore not including the 25 yrs and any money spent by my father whilst he had it.”

“ I have now clocked up 8,500 kms in the car without any major mechanical problems.”

“Model ‘T’ Fords don’t have a petrol pump, water pump, oil pump, speedo or windscreen wipers. As for a heater you are joking!!! You just remove the floorboards.”

The cars departed the Automotive Centre of Excellence, Docklands, at 11am, after Mr Tim Pallas, the Minister for Roads, waved the Australian flag to start the re-enactment tour that is celebrating the history of Victoria’s greatest and most-spectacular scenic road.

The Great Ocean Road 75 Years Celebration Tour is sponsored by VACC, with all proceeds going to Retina Australia.
