Ford Out for Top Spot In the Top-End

Staff, Saturday July 1, 2006.

The driver in the spotlight at the moment is CAT Ford Performance Racing’s Jason Bright. Bright recently scored Ford’s 150th pole position at Winton, before finishing second to fellow Ford driver Craig Lowndes (Team Betta Electrical) for the round.

In his previous seven visits to Hidden Valley Bright has finished on the Darwin podium four times. This includes his first ever round victory with Ford in 1999. He also finished second overall in 2001 and 2002, and third in 2003. Bright has enjoyed a strong Hidden Valley qualifying record, including pole in 2002, as well as front row starts in 2003 and ‘04. Bright also has the distinction of holding the V8 Supercar qualifying and race lap records at Hidden Valley.

Bright will go into the Darwin event with no distractions having announced that he will drive for his own team (Britek Motorsport) from 2007. He remains committed to Ford Performance Racing for the 2006.

“I have always enjoyed racing at Hidden Valley,” said Bright.

“I have had some great races there and I have no doubt that the nature of this circuit will particularly suit our cars.

“Our speed coming into this round places FPR in a very strong position for success. After coming so close at Winton, I couldn’t think of a better place to take that top step on the podium.

“This is a major event in Darwin and our races at Hidden Valley generate a great deal of excitement and atmosphere with the Northern Territory fans.

“The announcement late last week on my decision to race for Britek next year clears the way for us to get on with making sure FPR continues its strong improvement; that includes Hidden Valley”

In contrast to Ford Performance Racing, Dick Johnson Racing had a shocking outing at Winton. However, Hidden Valley has produced strong results over the years and young gun Will Davison is aiming at proving that once again this weekend.

“I am absolutely looking forward to Darwin, especially after our disappointment at Winton,” said Davison.

“We’ve had nearly a month off, so I’m jumping out of my skin to get back out there.”

“It’s been good to have that time, we had a really busy start to the year, it’s given me a chance to look at both the things we’ve done well, and not so well.”

“The team is confident of a good result in Darwin; we’ve made some small developments with the car and are looking forward to putting them to work.”

“My goal is to score my first top-10 shootout.”

“It’s one of the hottest races for the year, it will be tough but I’m confident I’ll be fine. My fitness is up there, I’ll try to look at the heat as a positive and hopefully be stronger than others in that respect.”

“The guys finished well in Darwin last year, 4th and 5th, so the team is optimistic to replicate those good results.”

“The team is in good spirits. Everyone was down after Winton, but sometimes it’s good to have a result like that, it makes you try twice as hard next time.”

All officially supported Ford drivers will visit Alice Springs on their way through to Darwin for a special Evening with Stars event on Wednesday night.

Crews hit the track for practice on Friday before qualifying, the top-10 shootout and the opening race on Saturday. The final two races, including the reverse-grid race, will be run on Sunday.
