Dear Colcam,
I own an AU with IRS and seem to have a clunking noise when taking off forwards or in reverse coming from the rear of the car. Any ideas what this may be?
Thanks,
David D.
Thanks David for your mail, there are a couple of things that can cause this noise. The inexpensive one a Universal Joint, the expensive one the Differential. The AU IRS Differential is known for some clunking noise since new in many vehicles. An oil change and the addition of an additive solved many of these problems. You didn’t say how many Km’s your car has done this could have helped with my diagnosis. Towing large loads frequently can also shorten the life of the differential and cause wear. This creates a condition called backlash which is movement between the Pinion & Crownwheel gear teeth. I suggest you get this checked by a diff specialist ASAP. A worn universal joint on the tailshaft can be dangerous if it breaks. Not good news for you.
