A group of Ford?s V8 Supercar drivers will be carefully monitored by world-leading medical technology during this weekend?s V8 Ultimate at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne.Drivers will have their core body temperatures monitored by a unique system that has them swallowing a pill-sized sensor, which transmits data every ten seconds to a computer logger that will be outside their body.
Developed by USA-based HTI Technology, the CorTemp? device is designed for measurement of the all-important core body temperature in patients for whom rectal and tympanic catheters are not appropriate.
It will be the first time the Florida designed and developed technology will be used in the harsh environment of car racing.
The CorTemp? Disposable Temperature Sensor (COR-100) is a totally safe method of transmitting the data and remains intact after being passed through the body.
Ford?s MediRace team led by Ford?s Corporate Manager of Health & Safety, and a trained physiologist, Kim Flanagan, will also monitor heart rates as well as collect information on hydration and oxygen levels of the drivers.
Managing Director of HTI Technology, Bill Hicks, will be on hand to supervise the operation of the equipment by the MediRace team.
?We started the Ford MediRace program at Bathurst to better understand how we can monitor and maintain the Ford drivers before, during and after a race,? said Kim Flanagan.
?This world leading technology will allow us to monitor the drivers while they are actually in the heat of the battle.
?An exciting part of the program this weekend involves leading racing computer specialists, MOTEC, which supply the majority of the teams with their on-board vehicle management systems.
?The MOTEC system sends ?live? data from the car?s vital areas back to the pit-lane computers of each team.
?It?s anticipated that the driver?s vital statistics through the CorTemp? device can be included in this ?live? data feed.
?We already know that the heart rate recording system we are going to use does work through the MOTEC system, so we?re confident the same can be applied to the CorTemp? device.
?The impact on being able to maintain a driver through three 150km races could become the difference between winning and losing.?
Drivers are set to endure cabin heat of well over 20 degrees above the ambient air temperature, while being fully clothed in triple-lined flame proof suits and helmets.
The MediRace team includes Ford Health Services Manager John McGill, Ford Melbourne?s Medical Officer Tim Hwang and Sydney based General Practitioner Frank Vella.
