Winterbottom has taken the major prize of a full-time seat in the 2002 Australian Formula Ford Championship, courtesy of Ford Racing Australia.
The final round of the 2001 Ford KartStars Series attracted a quality field of young drivers to Melbourne?s Todd Road Circuit over the weekend of October 13 - 14.
Winterbottom and Cox went into the grand final tied at the top of the series with William Yarwood close behind.
Melbourne driver Taz Douglas was fastest in the time trials, breaking Cox?s stranglehold on qualifying throughout this series.
Cox was second fastest and Winterbottom third, making for a classic series of races to decide the title.
The Pre-Final was the beginning of serious racing for championship points as Yarwood took the win ahead of Josh Arandt followed by Winterbottom and Cox.
The Championship would go down to the wire in the final.
The battle on the track between Wall, Yarwood, Cox, Winterbottom and Arandt was thrilling with constant lead changes.
The key moment in the race came when Winterbottom passed Cox into a tricky dogleg corner, pushing him wide on the exit.
This closed up the leading group, as Cox slipped back to fifth, with Wall taking the lead from Winterbottom.
With Cox?s championship in the balance he drove past Arandt and clashed with Yarwood trying to catch the front two.
This put Cox onto the grass and out of contention for the race and the Championship.
Wall went on to win the race from Winterbottom and Arandt, with Yarwood placing fourth.
Although second in the race, Winterbottom was crowned series champion, just four points ahead of Cox.
?It was a great fight not only between Chris and myself, but the entire leading group,? said Winterbottom.
?I was just concentrating on trying to win the race, rather than trying to add up points scenarios.
?Even after crossing the line I wasn?t sure if second was good enough - so I had to have it confirmed by the officials!
?The KartStars Series has been great - I?m now looking forward to making the most of the Formula Ford ride next year and further establish myself in motor racing.?
Apart from Winterbottom?s full season in Formula Ford, runner-up Cox will travel to the UK to undergo a racing driver's course at one of the most famous schools in the world.
