Ford Credit /FPV Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom has claimed second overall at the Gillette Challenge, the 10th round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series on the streets of the Gold Coast.
Winterbottom took third place in each of the three races, to finish just 13 points behind round winner Todd Kelly.

Winterbottom put in another mature performance, driving hard but clean, while others suffered from the unforgiving nature of the Surfers Paradise street layout.
The result underlined the 25-year-old’s third place standing in the championship. The result comes after victory at Sandown and second place earlier this year in New Zealand.
“It was a great weekend for us,” said Winterbottom.
“We had a car that was in the top-three throughout practice, qualifying and the races. It’s great to get a second-overall.
“The car was excellent throughout each of the races. It was comfortable to drive and importantly the brakes were strong all the way.
“It was always important to be towards the front for the starts. Outside of the pit-stop shuffle, we were never lower than fourth. That was critical when others were beating-up each other behind us.

“In terms of the championship, we are just going to keep on doing what we’ve done. Our car will be good in Tasmania and Phillip Island, plus Bahrain is a new experience for all of us.
“Anything can happen in car racing. If there’s a chance for us to jump further up in the championship chase we’ll take it.”
As good as it was for Winterbottom, it was the opposite for championship leader Craig Lowndes (Team Betta Electrical).
Lowndes was on the end of two penalties. A start procedure infraction in race #1, resulted in him being relegated from fifth to 11th. Then while battling for fifth with CAT Ford Performance Racing’s Jason Bright and Caltex Racing’s Russell Ingall he cut-through a chicane. Although he gave the spot to Ingall, the race director had already called a drive-through penalty. He finished that race in 14th to be classified 10th overall.
Lowndes remains in the championship lead, although his advantage has been cut from 101-points to 30.
Ford finished with six in the top-10 overall; Jason Bright (CAT Ford Performance Racing) finished the round in fourth, Russell Ingall (Caltex Racing) in fifth, Steven Johnson (First Rock Home Loans Racing) in seventh, Jason Bargwanna (WPS Racing) in eighth and Lowndes in 10th.
