Jamie Whincup drove a stellar weekend for Ford at round five of the 2007 V8 Supercar Championship series to finish third for the weekend and secure his top three Championship position.

From a qualifying position of fourth the Team Vodafone star pushed the # 88 Falcon to its limits with some impressive albeit aggressive driving to finish second in race one, third in race two and fourth in race three.

Whincup finished equal with Todd Kelly on 52 points for the weekend however Kelly’s win in the third sprint race today saw Ford on the bottom step of the podium.

“I always give it everything, and today that was good enough for third,” Jamie Whincup said.

“At Pukekohe I said our plan was to catch these (Holden) guys and I’m happy with the progress we’ve made.

“We’ve still got a little way to go, but we’ve certainly got great speed and that was evident this weekend.”

Showing immense consistency 24-year-old has been on the podium three times in five starts and is a definite Championship contender.

“It’s generally been the trend that the guy who’s most consistent ends up on the top step, but really my focus is to get out there each time and do the best I can and so far it’s been a clean run.

“Once things start going right, they start going right, and that’s important for keeping the pressure on the Holdens.”

Team-mate Craig Lowndes was also hot contender at the Creek, back to form by running first fastest in practice, slipping to 16th in qualifying before charging to ninth in race one and fourth in race two.

The Ford driver took on HRT with a vengeance in race three, pushing to second and firmly planting himself fifth in the Championship standings.

Both Ford Performance Racing drivers held-fast in the top ten, Steven Richards finishing sixth for the weekend and Mark Winterbottom right behind him in seventh.

Jim Beam Racing’s Steven Johnson and Caltex Racing’s Russell Ingall rounded out the top ten for Ford in ninth and tenth respectively.

“Ford had six in the top ten this weekend, and has six in the Championship top ten,” Ford Racing Manager Ray Price said.

“We keep seeing over the course of each event, different contenders for the Blue Oval.

“It’s absolutely encouraging to see so many of our teams and drivers capable of running well inside the top ten.”
