Westpac Fleet Converts to Environmentally Friendly LPG Fords

Westpac Banking Corporation today announced it has reached an agreement with Ford Australia to act as sole supplier to Westpac’s tool of trade vehicle fleet over the next three years.

Group Executive, Business and Consumer Banking, Mr Mike Hawker said the agreement would allow Westpac to take advantage of the latest automotive technology ensuring greater environmental and cost efficiencies.

Ford Australia will provide approximately 800 dedicated LPG Falcon Forte sedans, and 50 Explorer four wheel drives in a deal worth $24 million over three years.

“The agreement with Ford to supply LPG dedicated sedan vehicles to Westpac’s fleet strikes a balance between our business and environmental objectives. It also represents Ford’s biggest ever fleet contract of dedicated LPG vehicles in Australia,” Mr Hawker said.

“We expect to achieve cost savings of $2 million over 3 years, through the significant reduction in fuel expenses associated with LPG powered rather than petrol powered vehicles.

“As a signatory to the Greenhouse Challenge, the environmental benefits of running a largely LPG dedicated fleet were also an important consideration. The adoption by Westpac of LPG as the preferred fuel, and the introduction of a dedicated LPG sedan fleet is another practical example of our commitment to the environment.”

The US Department of Energy has found that LPG achieves a 20 percent reduction in global warming potential compared to petrol, while Australian studies show that using LPG produces 80 percent less air toxins and 30 percent less smog-forming emissions than petrol. Ford estimates that over 20,000km of driving, an LPG Falcon will emit one tonne less carbon dioxide than a petrol powered car over the same distance.

“Westpac’s agreement with Ford Australia to provide a fleet of dedicated LPG sedan vehicles, and our partnership with Orix Australia as fleet manager, shows how Australian businesses can work together for the environment while continuing to meet their business imperatives,” Mr Hawker said.
