Three of Australia?s leading V8 Supercar drivers, Jason Bright (CAT Ford Performance Racing), Jason Bargwanna (Orrcon Steel Racing) and Greg Ritter (Ford Credit / FPV Ford Performance Racing) all gave the Wallabies players expert guidance in advance driver training.
In a special "Wallabies Challenge" the Australian team were put through a number of driving tests in a selection of Ford Falcon vehicles. The final test was a timed motorkana where the fastest player was awarded the "Wallabies Challenge" trophy.
The Qantas Wallabies sent a strong line-up of players including Steven Larkham, Mat Rodgers, Stirling Mortlock, George Smith, Matt Giteau, and Rocky Elsom.
Defending Wallabies Challenge champion Stephen Larkham was unable to defend his title, with Stirling Mortlock taking this year's challenge.
"I took home the 'Driving Miss Daisy' award last year, so I'm delighted to take the title this year," said Mortlock.
"It's a great way to relax before a big match. Since our first drive day with the Ford Racing guys last year a number of us have become V8 Supercar nuts.
"The drivers are terrific to deal with. I know that all the players get an appreciation for car racing and more importantly improving our own driving."
Jason Bargwanna was pleased to catch up with the Wallabies and had plenty of praise for their driving.
?The day is about having plenty of fun, but more importantly teaching the guys some valuable lessons on how to drive cars,? said Bargwanna.
?I?ve raced at 93 rounds in V8 Supercars and I?ll always continue to learn how to improve my driving. It?s no different in rugby; otherwise they?d just turn up and not worry about training.
?A day like this gives the guys the very best opportunity to explore the limits of the cars with the best drivers in the country as instructors. It?s something they certainly couldn?t do on the open road.
?It?s a big thrill to be able to get together with the Wallabies again. I must say that their driving 12 months down the track is a big improvement. I hope they can carry that over to the Test matches over the next couple of months."
Bargwanna recently gave Stephen Larkham a ride in his V8 Supercar at Eastern Creek. Larkham is the second-cousin of Bargwanna's boss Mark Larkham.
Over the past 12 months Ford Racing has held similar events with the Geelong Football Club and the Australian cricket team.
