Wall Takes Stunning Kartstars Win in Newcastle

The second round of the 2001 Ford KartStars Series at Newcastle (June 30 and July 1) provided an unexpected result with Matthew Wall upsetting the local favourite Chris Cox, to win in his first appearance of the championship.

Wall missed Round One at Raleigh (NSW North Coast) due to other racing commitments but came out firing at Newcastle qualifying second behind series leader Cox.

Cox, the local hero helped construct the circuit with his father, and was recognised as a gun when it comes to putting in fast lap times.

Top of the time trials for the second meeting on the trot was Cox followed by Wall, with Mark Winterbottom and William Yarwood on the second row.

It was during the heats where the surprise package of Wall began his charge - winning the first two and placing second in the third race. Cox had a second and two third placings in the heats.

Wall had pole position for the pre-final with Winterbottom sharing the front row with Cox at position three.

Cox went on the hunt, passing the front two drivers to win the pre-final by a couple of kart lengths from Wall and Winterbottom.

It appeared as though Cox had sat back in the heats to pounce in the championship points earning pre-final and final.

The final was lead by all three podium placegetters, Wall, Cox and Winterbottom at some stage but it came down to a battle between Cox and Wall.

Cox moved to the front by mid-race and appeared to be in control. Then Wall made his move with only a handful of laps remaining.

Once in front Wall was able to hold-off Cox for his first victory in six series races.

Wall’s victory now has him placed in 14th position in the championship standings. However, each driver’s worst round will be dropped to make up the final placing at the end of the year.

Ford Racing Australia's involvement in KartStars is aimed solely at identifying talented Australian drivers and providing them with a clear and direct path, regardless of their ability to raise the significant sums of money required to compete at the top levels.

All competitors run the same Drew Price Engineering (DPE) chassis type and the Rotax Max FR125 (cc) engines are dyno tested and then sealed, to ensure they are equal.

A control Bridgestone YGK tyre is used specifically for this Formula, and is the same tyre that was used at the World Max Challenge final and during the Ford series in 2000.

The top five drivers in the 2001 Ford KartStars series will battle it out for three major prizes. Two drivers will each receive a full season in Formula Ford and a third will undergo a racing driver's course at one of the most famous schools in the world, in the UK.

The driver selected as the winner will compete in the 2002 Ford Australia National Formula Ford Series Championship, with the runner up to contest the Victorian State series, both compliments of Ford Racing Australia.
