Tough Weekend in Paradise for Ford V8 Teams

Ford Australia?s leading V8 Supercar teams have experienced a tough weekend, during the three non-championship races to support the popular Indy 300 Champ Car on the Gold Coast.

Steve Johnson of Shell Helix Racing was Ford?s best overall performer with sixth place followed by Ford Tickford Racing duo Steve Richards and Glenn Seton.

Seton scored Ford?s best race result with third place in the opening 12-lap race, before alternator failure ended his run in the second hit-out.

?The car was very strong, unfortunately we had some debris from the track come up into the alternator which caused its failure,? said Seton.

?It was simply replaced after the race and we got on with the job.

?It?s the nature of street racing that anything can happen, I?m just happy it was that and not a crash into a wall ruining our weekend and the next race in New Zealand.

Ford teams performed strongly in qualifying, with Craig Lowndes starting on the front row.

However, a brush with the wall on the second lap ended his charge and sidelined him also in the following race.

Others to have dramas in the opening race were Johnson, Paul Radisich (Shell Helix Racing) and OzEmail Racing?s Brad Jones.

A number of drivers were given stop-go pitstop penalties for riding curbs, relegating a some of the leading teams.

The top-three place getters overall for the weekend were Garth Tander, Mark Skaife and Russell Ingall.

With all cars and equipment leaving Brisbane for New Zealand by ship on Tuesday 30 October, many teams took a conservative approach to the Gold Coast event.

Fortunately no V8 Supercar team suffered major damage with damage limited to minor scrapes and bent panels only.

?When you look at the overall results they aren?t that spectacular, but with no championship points on the line and the next race in New Zealand so close, no one could take a risk,? said Johnson.

?Overall everyone will go to New Zealand with their best packages available, which is great news for the Kiwi race fans.

?Winning the final two championship races is what everyone really wants to do and that will make for far better racing and more spectacular action.

The Boost MobileV8 International will be held at the Pukekohe Park Raceway south of Auckland between November 9-11.
