At the end of a frustrating qualifying period, Johnson found himself bumped out of the top 10 into 13th position, while Radisich will start further back in 15th, an unexpected result for a team usually accustomed to having at least one of its Falcon XR8s among the first 10 starters.
“We’re not far away from the pace,” team boss Dick Johnson said, “but we can’t seem to find the extra speed we need on new tyres. Both cars were understeering badly on cold tyres and by the time they heated up, the best of the rear tyres was gone.
“For some reason our cars always seem to struggle on these fast, flowing tracks, but I remember we had similar problems last year and Paul (Radisich) still won a race, so it’s not over yet.”
Throughout practice both drivers struggled with grip and balance, hovering just outside the top 10 in the super-competitive field.
“Starting back a bit (in the field) is certainly not ideal … it’s a bit busy back there and lots of things you can’t control can happen. But at least both races have pit stops in them which will mix things up a bit, and give us a chance to improve position,” Paul Radisich said.
Steve Johnson, third last time out in Adelaide, was also disappointed by today’s qualifying.
“The car just lacks overall grip … front and rear grip … and we can improve it but not solve it.”
