Paul Radisich set a new lap record of 1:43.2704 ahead of teammate Steve Johnson with Ford Tickford Racing’s Glenn Seton third.
The top fifteen drivers from today’s qualifying will have a shootout tomorrow morning to decide the final make-up of the grid.
Radisich underlined his reputation of being one of the best street racers, as he mastered the tricky Canberra layout.
“Both Steve and I had strong race cars today and this afternoon’s qualifying is a great result for the entire team,” said Radisich.
“Recently we have been somewhat off the pace, but today’s qualifying is certainly the place this team deserves to be.
“The track is very narrow, so being at the front is the best place to be, I’m confident the rest of the weekend will be just as strong.
Unlike his teammate, Steve Johnson was outside the top ten until late in qualifying when he set the second quickest time of the day.
“It’s great to have both cars at the front – now we have to reproduce that in tomorrow’s top-15 shootout,” said Johnson.
“The weather was quite tricky today and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it rain again over the weekend.
“It’s going to be very tough, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.
Tomorrow’s top-15 shootout will be followed by a 25-lap opening race, which will include a compulsory tyre pitstop.
Races two and three will be run on Sunday.
