The 26 year-old began the 78-lap race in eighth position, but was elevated to third by the middle of the race with two compulsory pit stops performed in the trim and professional style now synonymous with Gibson Motorsport.
“Today’s win is a magnificent boost to the team, and all I can say is we’re really looking forward to repeating the effort tomorrow with double points on offer for race two,” Craig Lowndes said.
“Scoring a win by 10 seconds at such a difficult event was just amazing, and the result’s a real credit to everyone’s hard work at Gibson Motorsport.
“We’ve got a great race package here in Adelaide. We’re developing the car all the time and making huge gains, and today’s win will certainly push the guys to keep the momentum going,” he said.
“I think a lot of the teams will be looking to the skies before tomorrow’s race two, and the weather will be dictating our pitting strategy.
“But we’ll be working hard for a back-to-back victory. We wanted to be part of something big this year with Ford Racing, and hopefully we can set the ball rolling at the Clipsal 500,” Lowndes said.
Finishing runner-up to Craig Lowndes was fellow Ford driver Steven Johnson. Before their showdown in race two, the pair will now set their sights on the last-minute training of their respective Celebrity Challenge drivers, pole position winner Nat Lowndes(wife of Craig) and Jill Johnson (mother of Steven) running second.
“Craig’s efforts today has definitely spurred me on for tomorrow’s five-lap Celebrity Challenge. It would be fantastic to repeat history with a one-two result for Jilly and I tomorrow. I want the win!” an excited Nat Lowndes said.
