Ford Racing?s commitment to health and safety has been recognised with the Chubb Fire Ford MediRace team winning the Ford Motor Company Innovation Award at the 2002 Presidents Safety Awards ceremony in Detroit.
First established at Bathurst in 2001, the Chubb Fire Ford MediRace team monitors and maintains hydration and oxygen levels, as well as general care of eight Falcon Supercar teams.
Before this inception, ?driver maintenance? was left up to individual teams and drivers. Now under the Ford MediRace program drivers receive the very best attention pre, post and even during the races.
The Chubb Fire Ford MediRace team was one of seventy applicants for the annual awards that recognise health and safety initiatives through the Ford Motor Company worldwide, including all its makes and companies.
The MediRace program was named in the final 16 nominees, winning one of the seven awards presented.
?When you consider the size of the Ford Motor Company around the world, this is a significant award, ? said manager of the Chubb Fire Ford MediRace team, Kim Flanagan.
?Ford across the globe prides itself as a leader in health and safety, and the judges were clearly impressed in what the Chubb Fire Ford MediRace team has achieved in just over 12 months.
?More importantly the Ford Racing teams have recognised the importance of the program and through their enthusiasm for the program we have been able to continually grow our efforts?.
Going into the final round of the 2002 V8 Supercar Series, the Betta Electrical V8 Ultimate at Sandown, the Chubb Fire Ford MediRace team is expecting one of its busiest weekends of the year.
Temperatures in Melbourne recently have climbed into the mid 30 degree C. range, and with temperatures inside the car expected to be at least another 20 degree C. hotter, physical and mental demands placed on the drivers will be extreme.
?V8 racing is one of the toughest sports physically and mentally,? said Flanagan.
?This weekend?s final round at Sandown includes a 150km race on the Saturday and a 300km race on the Sunday. That final race is expected to be the toughest of the year.
?We have a major program in place for Sandown, with the key areas being hydration preparation and maintenance during the events, as well as post race recovery.
?We are also recommending that all teams run systems that allow cool air to the drivers, as well as cool suits to keep their core body temperatures maintained over what will be two hours of racing on Sunday afternoon.
?It would not surprise me to see driver fitness play a key role in the results, I know that we are giving the Ford drivers a distinct advantage in this area.?
Along with Flanagan, the MediRace team includes Medical Team Leader Dr. Frank Vella, Registered Nurses Chrystal Musgrave and Justine Bradley.
