The innovative Ford Territory has secured Australia's major design award.

The Ford Territory won the Australian Design Award of the Year for 2004 at a gala dinner in Sydney.

Ford Australia Product Development Vice President Trevor Worthington was presented the coveted award by the Governor-General of Australia, Major General Michael Jeffery.

"This award is another great reward for the long hours put in by a dedicated team of designers and engineers in coming up with the landmark Territory vehicle," Worthington said.

"The Australian Design Awards are a significant benchmark for an Australian manufacturer in any industry and to win the overall award is just a tremendous honour."

"Everyone working on Territory knew they were contributing to a groundbreaking design that

combines the nimbleness and agility of a car, the versatility of an SUV with the seating flexibility of a people mover.

"It's extremely satisfying to have the hard work of the entire Ford Australia team recognised with the highest award on offer."

The Australian Design Awards was established by the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA), which was founded in 1957.

Since 1991, the Australian Design Awards program has been a division of Standards Australia. The Australian Design Awards has a very proud history of recognising Australian design icons including the Hills Hoist, the Victa lawn mower, the winged keel, the Cochlear ear implant, the Sunbeam Mixmaster, the Dolphin torch and now the Ford Territory.

The Ford Territory goes on sale June 1.
