The stunning sports convertible ? developed by Ford?s Ghia design studio in Turin - has wowed audiences around the globe with its unique interpretation of traditional open-top motoring.
Buoyed by an enthusiastic public response, Ford has given the go-ahead for a production version of the StreetKa, slated for launch in 2003.
Ford Australia Passenger Vehicle Marketing Manager, Stephen Kruk, said the company would be closely monitoring public reaction to the car in Sydney.
?The StreetKa concept draws big crowds whenever it?s seen and it is a product that we will certainly look at closely for the Australian market,? Mr Kruk said.
?The decision by Ford to go ahead and produce the StreetKa is another signal of the company?s intent to connect with customers in contemporary, exciting ways.
?The car exemplifies the spirit we?re striving to infuse into the Ford range - exciting new products that will transform the brand.
?Inspiration for the StreetKa concept came from studying European youth culture and the constantly evolving trends in street fashion, music and film to develop a car with an urban, street spider look and feel,? he said.
The exterior design of the StreetKa builds on the distinctive features of the Ford Ka, which was first introduced in 1996.
Exterior body panels are finished in a mauve-tinted, silver metallic paint and are complemented by an easy-fold, fully concealed canvas top.
Six-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in 17-inch, specially sculpted Pirelli racing tyres give the vehicle a wider performance stance. Modified headlights, new fenders and bumpers combine to complete the unique look.
The interior features two racing-style bucket seats trimmed in dark blue leather and an instrument panel of translucent plastic with anodised aluminium accents.
Unique driving gauges include an analogue speedometer and radio/CD controls that can be rotated to reveal a chronograph timer and a rev counter.
Structural reinforcements on the interior and two aluminium roll bars add to the safety and stability of the passenger compartment.
Two aluminium bulkheads are positioned at the front and rear of the compartment and are connected by four longitudinal extruded beams that also function as concealed seat tracks.
Ford will reveal specific details of the production vehicle as the launch date approaches, but designers have been briefed to create a car that is faithful to the Ghia concept.
The production car will be the first product of a joint venture between Ford of Europe GmbH and renowned engineering and manufacturing house, Industrie Pininfarina SpA.
The joint venture allows Ford to produce niche vehicles from mainstream platforms, using Pininfarina expertise and experience in low-volume design and manufacturing.
