AFL Premiers, the Sydney Swans, have taken time out ahead of their match with the Brisbane Lions to get an appreciation for rally car driving.
Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos and players Barry Hall (captain), Leo Barry (captain), Brett Kirk (captain), Paul Williams, and Nic Fosdike got a speed fix sitting beside multiple rally champion Michael Guest.
The Swans were at Riverside Oaks outside of Sydney as part of the launch of the all-new XR5 Turbo Focus road car.
Taking the passenger's seat in the Pirtek Rally Team Ford Focus, the Swans experienced sliding through bends and taking jumps at full speed.
"I have a new appreciation for skilful driving," said Paul Roos.
"A lot of people don't think racing drivers have to be fit; I can tell you Michael would have to be one of the fittest athletes both physically and mentally.
"The concentration is just extraordinary. He can't relax for a moment. I can see why he was sweating after just a few runs.
"I thought the coach's box was a pressure cooker. I wouldn't like to be a rally co-driver. To make all the right calls and have the driver work off every word is something very special."
Barry Hall has had the opportunity to sit in V8 Supercars and drag racers, but the rally experience was different again.
"Very fast, even on narrow roads," said Hall.
"The car never seems to be straight. I had no fear as Michael was clearly in control throughout and I could enjoy the ride.
"I really like cars and racing. I'm not sure if rallying will be my thing, but I certainly can appreciate their skill levels."
Michael Guest enjoyed the opportunity to meet AFL Premiers.
"Having the AFL Premiership team in the car was a big thrill," said Guest.
"You can always tell that they've had a good time, because they didn't want to leave. They really chewed my ear about the car, the team and the sport; so that's exciting.
"I even got the chance to get some words in about football.
"We have different sporting disciplines, but I always find a lot of similarities. The major factor being the competitive element that brings out the best in athletes, no matter what sport you play."
The Swans players also took a keen interest in the new XR5 Focus. A number of them keen to place an order for sporty Focus road car.
Pirtek Rally Team Ford travels across to Busselton for the second round of the NEC Computers Australian Rally Championship on 19-21 May.
