Focus embodies Ford?s adventurous design and styling philosophy, with a personality that is unique within its class.
The exterior design follows Ford?s trademark flowing form, sharpened with crisp edges, well-defined intersections and taut lines, together with large and distinctive front and rear lights.
The low hood line and basic shape of the car produce an excellent aerodynamic performance, while still providing maximum crash protection.
The body was developed extensively in Ford?s wind tunnel (for optimum aerodynamics, to help give Focus excellent fuel economy.
The car features a distinctive ?Kamm? tail, an extended roofline and carefully contoured trailing edge that reduces drag by minimising the aerodynamic wake of the vehicle.
The shape also allows for tall door openings, which improve access for passengers and the driver, as well as interior head and shoulder room.
High-mounted tail lamps on the hatchback give Focus a strong road presence and help reduce the likelihood of rear end shunts.
The sedan shares the hatch front-end design, but the unique rear design provides a more traditional, luxurious tone with a short tail containing a wide, deep boot.
It has a generous 490 litres of luggage capacity, which can be increased further by the 60/40-split rear seatback with flip/fold feature.
An intelligent interior
The key to the Focus interior design is its long wheelbase and high roofline, which together provide a remarkably spacious package, with outstanding head and shoulder room for a car of its size.
State-of-the-art three-dimensional imaging software was used to design the interior so that most shapes and sizes of driver or passenger can find a comfortable seating position and have easy access to controls.
Specially formulated foam in the seat cushions, together with carefully contoured seat pans, are ?tuned? to provide maximum comfort while eliminating noise transfer from the car?s suspension.
Overall, Focus cabin quietness levels are exceptional, thanks to the car?s rigid body structure, which provided an ideal base for Ford?s engineers to work on NVH reduction.
Highly precise vehicle assembly methods provide micrometre precision in door and window fit, further enhancing cabin quietness, while special seals and extra stiffening of engine and suspension mounting points help eliminate sound resonance.
Interior details reflect the work of Ford?s extensive ergonomics research, including the tailgate release, which is placed high on the instrument panel and close to the door, enabling easy operation from inside or out.
The positioning of controls has been prioritised, with heater controls placed below the more frequently used audio controls, but still high enough to be within the eye and reach zone. Audio controls are also steering-column mounted for easy driver access.
Climate control rotary switches are rubberised, while push buttons have silicon pads.
The Focus interior complements the exterior styling, with the same elements of curved lines and smooth surfaces.
The instrument panel is tightly packaged around the components beneath to give maximum free space for controls and stowage.
The overall impression conveys a well-planned, roomy environment.
An overall colour-keyed theme is contrasted with black insets to emphasise key functional areas such as the instrument panel, switchgear, centre stack switches, vents and gearshift lever.
