Ford?s two-car Falcon XR6 Turbo entry has made an encouraging start to the 2003 Targa Tasmania road rally sitting in a strong outright position ahead of many more fancied rivals.

The lead entry of Steve Hoinville and Ruth Williams is 16th outright, while Michael Taylor and Bronwyn Humphrey are placed 21st just a handful of seconds behind V8 Supercar star Steven Richards.

Competing in the Modified Specification (MS) class in a Ford Racing prepared Falcon XR6 Turbo, Hoinville and Williams were encouraged by their strong start to the event.

?Usually there?s a group of high-powered European and Japanese cars that start very strong, so to be where we are right now is a good sign as the event continues through to Sunday night,? said Hoinville.

?The Falcon XR6 Turbo has been very good to drive and the addition of the turbo engine has clearly given us a boost for 2003.

?The stages in the opening couple of days have been a mixture of tight and twisty to open fast sections. The weather has played its part with everything from dry through to torrential conditions, but the car has been solid in both.

?It?s still a long way to go, but in terms of tyre life and the car?s overall performance we?re sure that we can climb a lot further up the leader board.?

Following a detailed preparation, Williams was pleased with the teamwork in and out of the Falcon XR6 Turbo.

?I?m surprised that we have been quicker than some of the more fancied drivers and cars, but we did come down to Tasmania fully prepared,? said Williams.

?With the weather now becoming quite wet and slippery, it?s going to be about driving to the conditions and not making any mistakes.

?The Falcon XR6 Turbo is proving itself to be a very competitive package and I?m really enjoying the competition in a strong car.?

Driving a standard Falcon XR6 Turbo, MOTOR editor Michael Taylor and wife, Bronwyn Humphrey, have enjoyed the opening days of the Targa Tasmania.

?The car has been very good, especially in the tricky conditions,? said Taylor.

?To be challenging the likes of Steve Richards in the Monaro is something I?m really enjoying.

?We are sticking to a plan of being competitive without being overly aggressive and as this event goes on I know that will provide a good result?.

Run over 44 Targa stages, the six-day rally covers a total distance of 2,299km, with 464km competitive.

Over the next two days Targa Tasmania travels around the north-east of Tasmania, with a run down to Hobart for the Friday night.

On Saturday crews travel back through the centre of Tasmania to the north-west coast town of Burnie, with the final days seeing crews travel down the west coast through Queenstown and back into Hobart for the finish.
