Queenslander Will Power and his Toowoomba Confectionary Wholesalers Van Diemen raced to victory in both legs of the Ford Racing Australian Formula Ford Championship at Eastern Creek (Sydney) today. In an extremely close first race, Power began from second on the grid but cleverly overtook pole sitter Will Davison in the Valvoline Van Diemen early on.
Power’s front running position, although threatened, was never surrendered from then on despite some light contact between the two arch rivals in the closing stages of the race.
The battle of the Wills resumed in race two with Power once again edging out his namesake and consolidating his position as the championship leader.
“I was disappointed not to get pole yesterday but this result is great, and given me a lot more confidence. It was difficult to keep Davison at bay in both race because he’s driving so well,” Power says.
Although a little dissatisfied, Davison was not unhappy with his performance today.
“We picked up some good points, raced at the front, I know we can go faster and it’s still early in the season so the championship is not over by a long way,” the Victorian teenager says.
Avon Rookie of the Year leader, Jamie Whincup, took his Bosch Mygale to an impressive third in both races.
Starting from fifth on the grid in leg one, he reeled in the Optima Motorsport Van Diemen of David Clark before turning his attention to Nick Agland in the Bosch Batteries Spectrum, who he also passed.
The racing between Whincup and Agland was again close in the second event with Barton Mawer in the Tekno Autosports Van Diemen joining in for a tough three-way tussle.
“We’re using our older engine today after we blew the other yesterday, we’re a bit underpowered, so a podium position in both races is an excellent result,” Jamie Whincup said.
