Points Haul the Goal for FTR on Adelaide Streets

Ford Tickford Racing (FTR) go to the first endurance race of the 2001 Shell Championship, the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide between April 6-8, with an eye on victory at the event and stake a claim to the title chase.

Steven Richards and Glenn Seton have a great chance on the Adelaide streets, Richards won the street race encounter in Canberra last year, while Seton finished fourth overall in Adelaide.

Adelaide features a 250km race on the Saturday and the Sunday; it is one of the toughest tests for the crews in the entire 13 round championship.

Seton and Richards will tackle the 500km test single handedly, no co-drivers to help share the load.

The FTR team is in a solid position after the opening round at Phillip Island with Richards in sixth place (191 points) and Seton lying in 10th (150 points).

“We have worked on the cars since Phillip Island and we go to Adelaide confident of a good showing,” said Seton.

“The circuit is hard on cars and drivers, but it is two 250km sprints, so you can’t make the slightest error or the competition will get away.

“It’s a great event for spectators with a real party atmosphere associated with the race.

Adelaide features a Top-15 Shootout, as well as a separate compulsory four-tyre and fuel stops in the twin 250 km races.

Steven Richards was one of the stars at the V8 races at the Grand Prix in Melbourne. The new FTR recruit claimed second in the second of three races, before damaging the front of the car in the final race.

“Street races are real fights, not much room and if you make a mistake the concrete walls end your day pretty quickly,” said Richards.

“We had both cars in the top-10 shootout at Phillip Island, so we have the speed and improved work during pit stops will give us a very good chance.

“There’s no doubt that a win in Adelaide is well earned, so victory would feel very special.

Now in its third year, the Clipsal 500 is expected to attract in excess of 160,000 spectators over three days of racing.
