Plenty of sunshine and dry conditions are what the Pirtek Rally Team is after at the third round of the NEC Computers Australian Rally Championship on 17-18 June.

Based on the Sunshine Coast, the coates Hire Rally Queensland's stages are a mixture of fast and tight sections.

The rear-wheel drive Focus is sure to shine in the faster sections, but the tighter areas will provide a tougher challenge; especially if it's wet.

Michael Guest is keen for any challenge, but he's aware that slippery conditions would give his rivals an advantage.

"Good weather will really show the potential of the Focus," said Guest.

"At the previous round in Western Australia we were actually keen for a little wet weather to pack down the roads. However, the Queensland roads are much firmer in the dry. Wet weather is sure to make it more slippery, especially in the tighter sections.

"Those tighter sections are more like forest tracks and not roads. This means that some of the sections are covered in grass. If those areas are wet we'll be up against it.

"In saying all that, you have to take on the challenge that's presented. I do like this rally as it's a true test of driver skill on the varying stages.

"Despite having run just two events, our team has really come a long way. Our speed is improving and my confidence is getting better every time I get behind the wheel. We have made some further refinements with the car since WA and we are confident of finishing both days in Queensland.

"After a non-finish in Canberra and a 10th placing on the first day in WA, we are now keen to complete an entire event. A clean run for us is sure to see us up inside the top-10."

Since Western Australia the Pirtek Rally Team crew has continued to work on improving the Focus and its components.

"With this car it's a process of refinement every time we run," said Technical Director Steve Hoinville.

"We had a good Saturday in WA, but then broke a driveshaft on the Sunday morning. We have had a good look at that, as well as other areas of the car that needed improvement.

"Of the improvements we have made are new drive shafts, improved suspension geometry and some changes to the differential.

"We are keen to get better traction and with Hankook's input we are confident of making an improvement in that area.

"You can't beat competitive kilometres to lean about the car. We are still very much in a development phase with the Focus."

The coates Hire Rally Queensland gets underway on Friday evening with a ceremonial start on the beachfront at Mooloolaba. The action then switches to the forests around the hinterland town of Imbil where 196 competitive kilometres will be contested over 19 stages and two heats on the Saturday and Sunday
