The round was won by Paul Morris, taking his first overall win in the V8 championship.
The result was a good reward for Richards, who battled back from a disappointing 15th qualifying position.
"It just was not our weekend," said Richards.
"We were only a couple of tenths of a second off the pace in qualifying, but that was enough to put us down the order. From there it was all catch-up.
"Our race pace was pretty good, but when you're back in the pack, it's always going to be tough.
Teammate Glenn Seton had an even worse weekend - qualifying 20th.
The races didn't get much better, with the Seton only able to climb one place better.
"Calder 2001 - is not one that will go in the highlights column," said Seton.
"We just couldn't get the car to work at its best - the car wasn't bad, it just wasn't great.
"Sometimes a bad weekend fires people up - I can tell you the entire team is determined to hit back at the next round at Oran Park on July 28 - 29.
