The newest member of Ford Australia's record breaking light commercial family ? the groundbreaking Hi-Ride utility ? has a name.

The ute will be called the RTV ? an acronym for Rugged Terrain Vehicle.

RTV was chosen from the thousands of entries received as part of the 'Win a Truckload of Tools' competition earlier this year where Ford invited people to name the new vehicle.

Mt Eliza resident Maurice Clarke came up with the RTV name, earning himself $10,000 worth of DeWalt power tools for his efforts.

"I saw the ute at the Melbourne Motor Show and thought it looked sensational," Clarke said.

"Rugged was the first word that came to my mind when I saw it, so I just worked on that concept.

"I couldn't really believe I'd won a truckload of tools when Ford contacted me, but I'm incredibly happy with the prize.

"And it's going to be nice to see an RTV on the road so I can tell everyone that I named it," Clarke said.

"RTV really hit a chord with everyone," said Falcon Ute Brand Marketing Manager Damon Paull.

"Rugged Terrain Vehicle perfectly describes the capabilities of this exciting new Ford product.

"It's a Falcon utility which means it delivers all the room of a Supercab design, creature comforts such as power windows and CD player, one-tonne payload capacity, the power of the Barra 182 DOHC six or optional Barra 220 V8 and Ford's legendary reliability.

"In addition to that, the RTV is fitted with a unique suspension kit that leaves the vehicle sitting 80 mm higher than standard, a wheel track that is 50 mm wider than standard and a differential locking system.

"Combined with some serious underbody protection, this means the RTV is capable of tackling some pretty rugged terrain."

Paull said the RTV was destined to become a unique vehicle just at home on the blacktop as it is beyond the Black Stump.

?Just as importantly it still provides a sensationally comfortable ride on the smoothest four-lane highway with proven suspension components that deliver superb ride and comfort."

He said the RTV would perfectly complement Ford?s existing range of 4WD utilities such as the legendary F-Series and Courier range.

?The RTV will be perfect for a tradesman who demands a durable workhorse during the week, but likes to take his vehicle a little off the beaten track on the weekends.

?Our objectives with the Hi-Ride utility were a rugged workhorse that offered outstanding comfort, ride and performance with the ability to go a little off the beaten track ? and this ute certainly delivers on all those attributes," Paull said.

The RTV will add another bow to the Ford utility line-up when it launches later this year.

Ford continues to dominate the utility sales charts and a record breaking sales figure of 2000 utes in June means the company is on track for another all-time sales record in 2003, to add to its 2001 and 2002 results.
