Ford’s mighty Mustang has returned to Australia after a 35-year absence.
The legendary American muscle car goes on sale this month, with buyers already lined up to own their slice of V8 heaven.
Mustang becomes the only V8 coupe or convertible available in Australia for less than $100,000, with the coupe on sale for $85,000 (RRP) and the convertible available for $89,000 (RRP).
“We already have deposits from more than 80 people who were so keen they ordered the car before the pricing was released,” Ford SVO Business Development Manager, Rick Nayler said.
“It’s that type of car. For enthusiasts, it’s a must-have proposition,” he said.
Mustang will be the most powerful car in Ford’s line-up, with a 4.6 litre all-alloy, quad-cam V8 producing 240kW of power and 430Nm of torque. The car comes with a long list of standard safety features, including multi-link independent rear suspension, traction control, ABS and dual airbags.
Other standard items include air conditioning, power windows and door locks, a tilt steering column, full-length centre floor console, remote keyless entry system, interval windscreen wipers and a high-performance Mach®460 Sound System with 6-disc in-dash CD player.
Mr Nayler said the Mustang would appeal to drivers who wanted to stand out from the crowd in the peak hour rush.
“With the top down and the music on, it is the quintessential fun-to-drive and fun-to-be-seen-in car.
“The car has retained styling cues that made the original Mustang a classic, including the long hood and short deck, the prominent hood scoop and the galloping chrome pony. It also has a fantastic V8 burble.
“But the 2001 model is a thoroughly modern evolvement of the original Mustang, from its lightweight all-alloy V8 through to its sophisticated independent rear suspension,” he said.
Inside, the dual cockpit shape is reminiscent of the original Mustang, yet its wraparound design is modern and user-friendly.
The Mustang convertible provides the ultimate carefree and fun-to-drive experience in a practical and easy-to-use design. The power retractable convertible top has a hydraulic system for quick raising and lowering. A lid protects it from dust when it’s lowered and gives a tailored finish to the exterior appearance. The rear window is made of scratch-resistant glass.
Australian Mustangs are re-engineered to right hand drive by Ford’s highly respected performance car partner, Tickford Vehicle Engineering, and will carry full factory backing, warranty and parts support.
Mustang will be sold through Ford’s select range of FTE dealers, alongside the Falcon T-Series sedan range and the Cougar.
“Until now, Mustang enthusiasts have had to pay significantly more for locally-converted Mustangs, without the comfort of a factory warranty,” Mr Nayler said.
He said the Mustang already had a strong following in Australia, with the Mustang Owners Club boasting about 1500 members. There are an estimated 4000 privately-imported Mustangs on Australian roads.
