Focus is available with a range of modern four-cylinder, high-efficiency DOHC, 16-valve Zetec engines, with a reputation for excellent fuel economy, refinement and durability.
The Focus CL and Focus LX models have either a 1.8 litre engine coupled with 5 speed manual transmission, producing 85kW of power and 156Nm of torque; or an optional two-litre engine with four-speed, electronically controlled automatic transmission producing the same power, but 162 Nm of torque. Focus Ghia comes standard with the two-litre automatic.
Zetec models are powered by a revised two-litre engine producing 96kW of power and 178Nm of torque, while the ST170 (available early 2003) is powered by the unique high performance Duratec ST, developing 127kW of power at 7000rpm and 196Nm of torque from 2500pm.
All Focus powertrains are installed using a torque roll axis mounting system designed to deliver a smoother idle quality and improved NVH qualities. By mounting the engine close to the torque roll axis, vibrations from the engine to the chassis and body are reduced.
An alloy ladderframe inserted between the engine block and crankcase offers impressive engine stiffness, which also contributes to exceptionally low perceived noise levels in Focus.
Manual or automatic transmission
Five-speed manual transmission is standard on Focus CL, LX, Zetec and ST170.
The transmission is driven via a low-inertia, hydraulically operated clutch and shifts with a low-friction cable system that improves precision and durability, as well as reducing effort.
The ST170 features a six-speed manual transmission, jointly developed by Getrag and Ford.
The automatic transmission is Ford's four-speed electronic shift control (ESC) automatic with overdrive and lock-up torque converter. The auto is optional on all Focus CL, LX and Zetec models and is standard on the Ghia.
The system constantly monitors and controls seven different transmission inputs and integrates them with 11 different engine functions to calculate the best possible shifting strategy for the driving and operating conditions.
It also includes an adaptive strategy, which learns the particular style of the individual driver and adjusts the calibration accordingly.
