Federal Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources Ian Macfarlane officially opened Ford Australia's new Engineering and Technology Centre last Wednesday.

Mr Macfarlane also enjoyed the opportunity of a brief test drive in a prototype Ford Territory and came away impressed.

"I never thought I would be a convert to this type of vehicle ? but a drive in the Territory has been a quick lesson in why Australian automotive manufacturers are swiftly developing a niche in this particular part of the car market."

Mr Macfarlane praised the work of the engineers housed in the new facility and their contribution to the manufacturing sector.

"Vehicle manufacture is now this country's leading manufacturing sector, which is why the Australian Government will pump more than $4 billion into the industry over the next 10 years to give it every chance of becoming a world leader.

"While the money helps, it's the innovation and smart production ideas coming out of centres such as this, producing vehicles like the Territory, that will put Australia on the map," Mr Macfarlane said.

The 3340 square metre Engineering and Technology Centre is located adjacent to the current Research Centre at Ford's Campbellfield headquarters.

It houses 300 product development engineers and designers working on future Ford Australia products such as the Territory.

Ford Australia Product Development Vice President Trevor Worthington said the Engineering and Technology Centre was built to accommodate the company's growing product development needs and provide state of the art facilities to assist in collaborative engineering.

"The new Engineering and Technology Centre complements our extensive product development resources including the adjacent Design Centre, Product Engineering office in Geelong and the Proving Ground at You Yangs," Worthington said.
