Three centenarians, all born in 1903, are coming together for the first time at a special celebration in Geelong this Thursday, 20th February, 2003.Geelong resident, Charlie Sherson -- who turns 100-years-old in 2003 and is Ford Australia's oldest former employee ? is meeting the oldest running Ford car in the world, a 100-year-old Model A, on the occasion of Ford Motor Company's 100th birthday!
The venue for the birthday bash of the century is the Ford Discovery Centre which will exhibit the world-famous vehicle ? it was the 31st car built out of Henry Ford's first factory in Detroit in 1903 ? to the general public until Sunday, 2nd March.
Charlie Sherson was born just four months after Henry Ford launched his first car, the Model A, in June 1903. But Charlie took a more active role in Henry's later more famous Model T range-- Charlie helped to assemble the first Model Ts built in Australia in 1925 ? right here in Gheringhap Street where Geelong's historic woolstores and Ford Discovery Centre are located today.
"It is a real coup that Geelong is hosting such a significant vehicle in Ford history during the company's global centennial year," Ford Discovery Centre Acting Director, Mike Trickey said. "It's not only the age of the vehicle that makes it significant, but also its pristine condition."
The engine, the wooden-framed body, and glass-side curtains -- even its muffler -- are original. Not bad for a car that celebrates its 100th birthday in August this year!
The car features kerosene headlights, a bench seat for two open to the weather, a top speed of 40km/hr, and 72 inch spoke wheels. Its original purchase price was $600 with optional ?extras? of headlights $9.60 and extra seating for two (mounted over the rear section) for $80.
The Ford Discovery Centre is open six days from 10am ? 5pm ? closed Tuesdays (except public holidays). Admission: Adults $6, concessions $4, child $3, family $15. Phone (03) 5227-8700.
Media are welcome to attend the launch of the historic car exhibition this Thursday, 20th February at 10.30am at the Ford Discovery Centre, corner of Gheringhap and Brougham Streets, Geelong.
The car is registered and drivable ? members of the media are welcome to ?go for a spin?. The car's engine is just 8 horsepower. Compare this with Ford's latest release, the iconic muscle car, the Falcon GT, powered by a 389 horsepower engine!
Interviews are available with Ford Discovery Centre Acting Director, Mike Trickey, the Model A?s current owner, Tasmanian Francis Ransley, and 100-year-old former Ford employee Charlie Sherson.
Vision (SP Betacam) and images of Henry Ford, his original production line and Ford vehicles of the early 1900s, plus current Ford products and operations, are available upon request.
