The overall victory went to Todd Kelly, who scored his first ever V8 Championship round win.
Today?s two 150-kilometre races were run in torrential rain, with the final race of the day bringing out the best in Lowndes and his Ford Falcon AUXR8.
Lowndes led early, but a mistake saw him run across and fill his radiator with grass and mud.
The ensuing pit stop put him back to 14th place, before he stormed through the field to take the lead from fellow Ford driver, Ambrose, with just a handful of laps left.
?The Gibson team gave me a great car this weekend, but with the weather making track conditions extremely tough, I had a number of hairy moments,? said Lowndes.
?The last race was a perfect example of just how tough things were, I had the lead - went off the track and had to fight back right up until the end.
?We had a big battle with Marcos at the end, but we both came through to take a much needed win in the final race of the 2001 season.
?We had some ups and down this year, but to finish on a high is a great boost for the team as we go away and prepare for the 2002 season.
Ambrose had his first Shell Series Race win in his sights, as he dominated the majority of the final 150-kilometre race.
The Pirtek Falcon experienced a minor engine problem in the final laps, giving Lowndes a much needed speed advantage on Sandown?s long straights.
?I?m wrapped with the overall result this weekend, it was well earned in conditions I?ve never experienced in my racing career,? said the Ford rookie.
?I tried really hard in the last race, but Craig was on a mission and I just couldn?t hold him off.
?I know our team proved a lot this weekend and I have set my goals on winning the 2002 championship.
?I?ve really enjoyed my first season in V8?s and now that I?ve experienced all the tracks and the competition, I can?t wait for 2002.
Teams now enjoy a three-month break until the first race of 2002, the Grand Prix support event on the first weekend of March.
