The Ford Falcon AUXR8 driver was the class of the field in the top-10 shootout, setting a time of 1:08.0671 to be 0.1624 seconds quicker than former team mate Mark Skaife.
“It was a great lap, although I did have a small moment on the very first corner,” said Lowndes.
“Tomorrow will be very tough – especially with the weather remaining unpredictable.
“Our team is very good no matter what the conditions – so I’m confident of getting my first round win for Ford.
Another Ford driver to step-up in today’s qualifying session was rookie David Besnard of Caltex Havoline Racing, who will start tomorrow’s opening 36 lap race from third position.
“The car has been very good today and that gave me the confidence to do a good lap,” said Besnard.
“I’m looking forward to racing at the front – my race pace has been good this year.
“Qualifying is now behind me – I want to now show that I can do the same in the races.
Ford’s top placed driver in the championship, Steve Johnson (Shell Helix Racing) was the quickest after qualifying, but had to settle for fifth place after the shootout.
“I only made a couple of small mistakes on my hot lap and that put us a couple of rows back,” said Johnson.
“I’m still confident of doing a good job tomorrow - our crew is looking forward to the making up more positions in the pit stops.
Cat Racing’s John Bowe had one of his better runs in qualifying and the shootout, and will start from position eight.
Oran Park sees the championship return to pit stop racing, where each team must perform a compulsory four-tyre change in each of the 95km races.
This puts pressure on pit crews, as they try to gain valuable seconds over their competitors in the pit lane.
