Laser SR2 Turns up the HeatLaser SR2 Turns up the Heat

Ford's Laser SR2 will turn up the heat on its competition when it goes on sale in mid-April.

Complete with a 2.0 litre in-line four-cylinder engine, modified suspension for improved performance and driving dynamics, a sporty bodykit and aggressive stance, Laser SR2 will appeal to customers looking for a "hot four."

"SR2 will appeal to a whole group of buyers within the traditionally termed 'light car' segment," says Passenger Vehicle Marketing Manager, Stephen Kruk.

"These people don't buy their cars purely for economic or other 'sensible' reasons. They buy them for the feelings they inspire. They buy them because they love to drive. They buy them so they can have a true sporty feel to their car as well as a sporty look.

"Part of this of course is providing them with the best possible package in this class. SR2 definitely does all of this. The list of standard features, plus the improvements we've made to ride and handling, will all add to the enjoyment that the look and power of the car will provide."

The 2.0 litre engine will be complemented by 16" alloy road wheels, ABS brakes, and a full body kit with front and rear skirts, side rocker mouldings, a rear mounted spoiler, a big bore chrome exhaust tip, front fog lamps, and sporty SR2 decals.

The SR2 also features power windows, power mirrors, central locking, remote keyless entry, illuminated entry, map lamps, a single slot CD player and front driver and passenger airbags. Other standard features include air conditioning, power steering and an engine immobiliser.

The interior package on the SR2 also includes lidded cup-holders, new fabrics, a front passenger seat back pocket, and improved layout and operation of climate controls. SR2 is differentiated from other Lasers in the range by the inclusion of a white instrument set, a unique all-black interior trim, amber illumination of the audio system, and a silver centre panel surrounding the audio system.

The 2.0 litre engine provides 98kW of power at 6000 rpm and 178Nm of torque at 4500 rpm. Superior engine performance is achieved through key engine design features such as a vertical inertia charging system incorporated into the intake manifold to ensure high output over the entire engine-speed range, a knock sensor contributing to high fuel efficiency and torque, and increased rigidity in the clutch housing.

Increased body rigidity minimises body roll and vehicle pitch during cornering and braking, while improvements to the suspension mounting system include an added front suspension transverse member, increased thickness in the front suspension crossmember, and improvements to the rigidity of the rear suspension cross lateral link and central mount.

The SR2 suspension system also incorporates additional rear performance rods and an increased front stabiliser and rear spindle diameter.

SR2 continues the high standards of safety inherent in the Laser brand, but also adds new technology structural resin foam inserts at the top of the B-pillars for improved vehicle safety and reduced NVH. In addition, the ABS braking system incorporates a new Electronic Brake Distribution system that differentiates between a light load with no passengers and a heavy load with passengers and then allocates the ideal hydraulic braking pressure to counter the degree of any rear wheel slip.

Exterior colours include Black Magic, Amazon Green, Crimson Glow, Atlantic Blue, Platinum, and Quicksilver.

"Everything about SR2 highlights its status as the new, sporty 'hot four'," says Stephen.

"From the performance of the engine, through to the sporty bodykit and interior look and feel of the car, our customers are going to love the SR2."

Recommended retail pricing for SR2 is $27,390 for the five-speed manual and $29,178 for the four-speed automatic.
