The Ford Falcon AUXR8 driver finished just short of pole position, clocking a time just 0.0625 of a second slower than Mark Skaife.
Johnson took victory at the GMC 400 (Canberra) last month, and teammate Paul Radisich was the overall winner at the most recent round in Western Australia.
"It was a very good lap, and I'm very confident going into tomorrow's races," said Johnson.
"There are three sprint races tomorrow and starting from the front gives us a great chance to extend our team's winning streak to three, and Ford's to four straight.
"The only drama could be the weather - but I'm not worried about that, wet or sunny I'm ready.
Ford has four drivers in the first ten with Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) to start from fifth, Mark Larkham (Larkham Motorsport) sixth and Craig Lowndes (Gibson Motorsport) starting at eighth.
As expected qualifying was extremely close on the short and fast Calder layout - the top 26 cars separated by just over one second.
