Ford driver Steven Johnson (Shell Racing) has grabbed second place in a tough opening race of the Hot Wheels V8 Supercar Showdown at the Australian
Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park.
Johnson stormed from seventh place on the grid to finish behind Mark Skaife.
Shell Racing team-mate Paul Radisich brought his Falcon XR8 home in fourth
place after starting from 12th position.
Johnson’s result was the first ever podium for the 26 year-old who has shed in excess of 25 kilograms in the off-season.
“This result has been a long time coming, but now that I’ve tasted success I’m keen to go that one position further this weekend,” said a delighted Steven Johnson.
“I was mindful of taking care of my tyres towards the end of the ten-lap race, so we have plenty of good rubber for the rest of the weekend.”
One of the drives of the race came from Craig Lowndes, who fought back from 31st place to finish in twelfth position.
Lowndes was forced off the track at the first bend, but quickly stormed
through the field and will be a driver to watch over the remaining races
this weekend.
Pole sitter Marcos Ambrose took seventh place on debut, and with some race laps now under his belt, will be on the attack in race two.
