Johnson was beaten away at the start of today’s 78 lapper by yesterday’s race winner, Craig Lowndes, and Mark Skaife, but quickly dealt with Skaife in the opening laps to head the chase of Lowndes.
Mid race’s scramble for pit stops dropped the young Shell Helix team racer down the order but the number 17 machine was quickly on the move again, picking off Marcos Ambrose and Todd Kelly to set up a classic duel with Glenn Seton in the closing laps.
Johnson’s dice with Seton was all over quickly, however, the Shell Falcon diving past and pulling away to consolidate third place just three laps from the chequered flag.
Combined with yesterday’s second position finish, Johnson claimed second overall for the two legs behind Russell Ingall, second today to Jason Bright.
Johnson’s brilliant result shot him to fourth in the 2001 Shell Championship Series points table, behind Bright and Ingall, and ahead of defending champion Skaife.
“My car was great and the team did a really good job for me, and I thought we would always be in pretty good shape today,” Steve Johnson said.
“At the last Safety Car I talked to the team and they told me all the blokes in front of me had also stopped, I was a fair way back, so I thought I better pull my finger out.
“Going past the other guys I picked my time carefully because I didn’t want to get tangled up and ruin my race, and I just tried to make clean passing moves. And that’s how it worked out.”
While Steve had plenty to celebrate, Shell Helix teammate Paul Radisich had another character-building day.
Starting out of 30th after failing to make the finish yesterday, Radisich was on a charge immediately and quickly made his way through the field into the top 10. By lap 30 Radisich was fighting for sixth when a brush with Larry Perkins popped a tyre and put the number 18 Shell Helix Falcon heavily into the tyre wall.
Radisich pitted immediately where a badly bent steering arm was diagnosed, and many laps lost effecting repairs. ‘The Rat’ returned to the race and finished 28th, picking up 40 points to bring his tally to 198.
“A tough day, and very frustrating,” Paul Radisich admitted.
“Before the crash the car was very good and we solved some of the fume problems from yesterday, so I felt pretty good and I was looking forward to a strong result. But it’s the old story, when you have to fight through the field there’s always drama and that’s what happened again.
“We know we have the speed to win, we’ve got to convert it to results and hopefully that’ll happen at Eastern Creek.”
