Johnson Scores His First Win and Ford's 100th in Canberra

On a historic day for Ford in Australia, Shell Helix Racing’s Steven Johnson has backed-up yesterday’s race win with overall victory in front of 101,000 people at the GMC 400 in Canberra.

Johnson’s win was Ford’s 100th in Australian Touring Car Racing.

It was Ford’s second straight overall victory – following-on from rookie Marcos Ambrose’s win last month in Darwin.

It was the first time since 1997 that Ford has won two rounds in a row.

In a mature drive, Johnson took 12th place in the day’s opening race and third in the final double-points race to finish ahead of Garth Tander with Mark Skaife third.

“This has been a long time coming and although this is the first – I’m keen to have more,” said Johnson.

“Our team really needed to do well here in Canberra, and I’m thrilled for them as well as Ford.

“Our team is back on track and I’m sure both Paul Radisich and myself can continue on this winning path.

Dick Johnson, father of Steven and Managing Director of Shell Helix Racing was first to congratulate his son.

“I know how hard Steven has worked for this moment - so that’s very special,” said Dick Johnson.

“Our cars were great all weekend and that’s a credit to the crew and we can now set our sights on winning more races.

Cat Racing’s John Bowe enjoyed a strong meeting taking fourth place with Paul Radisich in fifth overall.

Earlier in the day Steven Richards took his first race win for Ford Tickford Racing after dominating the reverse-grid race.

Ford next goes racing in Western Australia at the Barbagallo Raceway on June 23 – 24.
