In a race where strategy played an important role, Johnson made his two mandatory pit-stops on consecutive laps, before fighting his way passed a number of teams to earn third for the day and the entire weekend.
"The balance of the car was great the entire day - I was able to keep the tyres in good condition which saw me pass Todd Kelly and Glenn Seton in the final laps," said Johnson.
"It was a real fight out there, we had a total of five safety cars to remove damaged vehicles, which played in the hands of some of our rivals with their pit stops.
"I just got on with it, and as my confidence continued to grow, the car just seemed to get better and better.
"This has been a great start to the year, and I can't wait for Eastern Creek at the end of the month.
Glenn Seton (Ford Tickford Racing) finished one place further back, after starting from 26th position on the grid. Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing) matched Seton, climbing from 36th to finish in sixth.
Seton's teammate, Steven Richards, was another driver forced to fight his way through the pack to grab seventh.
"We had great pit stops and that took us to towards the front," said Seton.
"Steven Johnson kept his tyres together and I just couldn't hold him off in the closing laps.
"I'm still delighted get a nice bag full of points, which has us in a good position in the championship.
Race one winner, Craig Lowndes, dominated the first half of the race, but with incidents happening behind him the Gibson Motorsport Falcon was unable to take advantage of the safety car.
After making his two pit stops, Lowndes got caught up in an incident in front of him. A damaged front wheel was replaced and he then set a new lap record (1:25.8364) in his pursuit - before crashing out of the race when dicing with former teammate Mark Skaife.
The Adelaide event attracted a record crowd of 166,800 over three days - bettering last year's attendance by 2,800.
Ford next goes racing in the Shell Championship Series at Sydney's Eastern Creek on 28-29 April.
