Peuschel, 31, was born with Cystic Fibrosis ? a genetic condition that affects the lungs, digestive system and mucus glands. Earlier this year, Peuschel underwent a double lung transplant at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
His new lease on life has inspired him to establish a charity organisation called the Lilly Foundation to raise funds for organ transplant technology at the Alfred Hospital.
Peuschel will use the Murray River Marathon ? the world?s longest flat-water kayak race ? to launch the Lilly Foundation on December 27, 2003.
Ford Performance Vehicles, which has created the ultimate range of Australian-built high-performance cars with the GT, GT-P and Pursuit Ute, is a proud major supporter of Peuschel and his spirited quest to conquer the race.
?Steve?s ambitious approach to life is truly inspirational,? David Flint, managing director of Ford Performance Vehicles, says.
?His determination to succeed, in both his endeavour to complete the Murray River Marathon and to raise funds for organ transplant technology, is amazing.?
Peuschel says the support he has received ? not only from FPV, but a variety of Australian companies ? has been a huge boost to the Lilly Foundation?s chances of offering some real support to patients waiting for an organ donor.
?Last year, 107 Australians died waiting for an organ transplant,? Peuschel says.
?Luckily for me, I was able to receive a new lease on life with a double lung transplant. Now that I have to ability to live normally again, my aim is to ensure that people still waiting for an organ donor receive the same opportunity as I have.?
Less than one year ago, Peuschel was unable to walk 20 metres without gasping for breath. Now he aims to compete in one of the world?s most physical challenges ? a five-day, 404 kilometre kayak race in the middle of an Australian summer.
?I realise that I am probably not going to win the race, but the fact that I can now compete in the event is victory for me,? he says.
Peuschel has been training up to 80 kilometres a day in preparation for the race with his brother Russell. The pair will compete in the event together in a double kayak while his wife Melinda will also participate as part of a separate relay team.
