One of the world's leading tyre makers, Hankook, has joined forces with Pirtek Rally Team Ford for the 2006 Australian Rally Championship.

Hankook made its debut with the team last weekend at the Rally of Canberra.

Hankook will support the team commercially, as well as supply and develop competition rubber specifically designed for the Ford Focus that is competing in the Australian championship.

Hankook has been working with domestic Ford teams in Europe over the past two years. Following positive performances from both Hankook and Ford it was decided to take up the challenge in Australia.

Hankook tyres are sold in over 170 countries with a strong reputation for quality products.

The entry with Pirtek Rally Team Ford is part of an aggressive marketing strategy to build the brand in Australia.

"Hankook is very excited about working with Pirtek Rally Team Ford in 2006," said Managing Director of Hankook Australia Jake Kim.

"Working with a professional rally team like this will provide us with excellent information on our range of competition tyres.

"This is an excellent opportunity to showcase our name against our competitors in the Australian tyre market.

"We will provide dedicated technical resources from Australia and Korea on this project, so that we can continue to improve the tyres throughout the year.

"The Focus rally car in Australia is rear-wheel-drive, so this requires us to build a certain type of tyre to get the best results. We are confident that our tyres will perform to a very high standard during the Australian Rally Championship."

Pirtek Rally Team Ford driver Michael Guest has been impressed with the commitment from Hankook.

"Tyres are a critical element in rallying, so it's great to get major support from Hankook," said Michael Guest.

"The Australian Rally Championship offers so many variables in terms of road conditions around the country. No other domestic championship has as many diverse challenges; so having the right tyres is all important.

"This arrangement is not simply about picking a tyre from the shelf and trying to make it work with our car. Hankook will design and construct a tyre that best suits our car. No other team in Australia has this level of commitment from a tyre manufacturer.

"A rally tyre has to offer so many different characteristics. The must be strong, provide plenty of grip and outlast the competition. Hankook has all bases covered."

The Pirtek Ford Rally Team and Hankook will next compete at the QUIT Forest Rally Western Australia on 20-21 May.
