Gibson Motorsport’s Craig Lowndes will fill an uncharacteristic 20th place on the grid in tomorrow’s long format races after a disappointing race one in the Shell Championship Series in Darwin. The Ford racer fared well in ultra-competitive morning practice times, with 21 drivers spaced within one second of each other. A Gibson Motorsport gamble in the qualifying session to conserve tyres for the top 10 shootout backfired when the 00 Falcon was knocked out of top 10 contention.
Starting in 11th position for the 17-lap race one sprint, Lowndes quickly slotted in eighth behind Holden’s Larry Perkins. The pair raced closely in a tightly packed procession until driver error saw Lowndes tag Perkins, resulting in an immediately-awarded stop-go penalty with several positions lost.
“I think today was pretty busy for all of us out there, with a race tacked to the end of normal practice and qualifying sessions,” Craig Lowndes said.
“We gambled on using six tyres for qualifying rather than eight, with a view to using a new set to position well in the top 10 shootout and race grid. Unfortunately the field was closer than we thought, and we lost our place after the bottom 50 percent qualified.”
“The race itself was quite hectic, with a few of us racing closely for places six through nine. One small error and it would have been over for someone. Unfortunately the error was mine through braking too late and Larry copped a Falcon in the back.
“The stop-go penalty saw us rejoin the track in 20th with a few laps to go, and it was difficult to regain positions from there,” he said.
“We’re just looking forward to tomorrow’s two 100km races. The longer format suits us better and we have a real chance of gaining some positions with the compulsory pits. The plan for tomorrow is to race and pit smartly, gain as many track positions as well can, and recover some championship points.”
