Richards will pilot one of the team’s Ford Falcon AU XR8s at both the Queensland 500 (August 26) and Australia’s premier motor race, the Bathurst 1000 (October 7); an event he has won on six occasions.
Jim Richards is the father of two-time Bathurst winner and driver of the number #6 FTR Falcon, Steven.
Managing Director and driver of the number #5 FTR Falcon, Glenn Seton, is confident of Bathurst success with what will be the most experienced and successful line-up of any team.
“Combined Jim, Steven and myself have 48 starts at the Mountain - Jim himself hasn’t missed the race since his debut in 1974” said Seton.
“Jim is one of the most sort after drivers for Bathurst each year, so to get him on-board early is a great bonus as our preparations for these two key events continues to move ahead.
“Winning Bathurst is something I’m yet to experience, but with two proven winners already in our team, it’s a great position to be in going to Mount Panorama.
Jim Richards made the decision to join the FTR line-up after taking part in pre-season testing at Phillip Island.
“It was great to have that opportunity to test the car first before being asked to join the team,” said Jim Richards.
“I go to Bathurst to win, if I can do that with my son that will be very special. However, if it’s better for the team that I run with Seton - I would be just as delighted to be part of Glenn’s first victory and my seventh.
“I have driven for a number of teams and FTR is a very professional operation and one that is determined to win its first Bathurst.
For Steven Richards the opportunity to have his father join the team is something he’s looking forward too.
“It’s great to have dad in the team, not just because he’s my father, rather the great wealth of experience he brings to FTR,” said Steven Richards.
“Dad and I have combined before at Bathurst back in 1996 - we didn’t have a great run that day, thanks to me hitting the wall. I have since won the race twice, so we are in great shape in 2001.
“To be successful at Bathurst you must have winners; that includes the car, the crew and the drivers themselves.
An announcement on the second driver and car pairings for the endurance races will be made after evaluating the combinations during further testing.
