The third round of the Ford KartStars Series (go-karts) will be held at Geelong’s Beckley Park Raceway.
Designed to find talented drivers, the KartStars series travels across all eastern States of Australia.
Endorsed by Ford Racing Australia, the series assists the young go-karters in their pursuit of a motorsport career by awarding two prizes of a full season in Formula Ford racing.
After two rounds Newcastle’s Chris Cox is leading the Series after winning the opening round from Sydney’s Mark Winterbottom who has placed on the podium twice.
Local driver Matthew Wall, who is a member of Geelong Kart Club, was the winner of Round Two at Newcastle and heads into his home round as the hot favourite.
After missing the first round due to other commitments, Wall is in good stead for the KartStars Series with each driver having to drop their worst round.
“I am looking forward to racing on my home soil,” said Wall.
“It’s a track which I know back to front, but it will not be easy to win because we have Australia’s best drivers in this series.
Entry to Beckley Park is free and racing begins at noon on Saturday and 10am Sunday.
Former karting champion and two-time Bathurst winner, Steve Richards of Ford Tickford Racing will present the trophies on Sunday.
“KartStars is a great incentive to young drivers wanting to forge a career in motor sport,” said Richards.
“There wasn’t actually a series like this when I was a junior racer - the opportunity to gain quality race competition as well as a seat in Formula Ford is sure to see one of these youngsters achieve their dreams.
Ford Racing Australia's involvement in KartStars is aimed solely at identifying talented Australian drivers and providing them with a clear and direct path, regardless of their ability to raise the significant sums of money required to compete at the top levels.
All competitors run the same Drew Price Engineering (DPE) chassis type and the Rotax Max FR125 (cc) engines are dyno tested and then sealed, to ensure they are equal.
A control Bridgestone YGK tyre is used specifically for this Formula, and is the same tyre that was used at the World Max Challenge final and during the Ford series in 2000.
The top five drivers in the 2001 Ford KartStars series will battle it out for three major prizes. Two drivers will each receive a full season in Formula Ford and a third will undergo a racing driver's course at one of the most famous schools in the world, in the UK.
The driver selected as the winner will compete in the 2002 Ford Australia National Formula Ford Series Championship, with the runner up to contest the Victorian State series, both compliments of Ford Racing Australia.
