Following a dramatic win at the VIP Pet Foods Queensland 500, Ford teams will return to individual driver racing for round 10 of the Shell Championship Series at Winton Raceway in central Victoria on September 8 – 9.
The Queensland winning combination of Steve Johnson and Paul Radisich of Shell Helix Racing will concentrate on closing in on a title challenge, while local knowledge is sure to benefit Ford Tickford Racing’s (FTR) Glenn Seton and Steve Richards. Johnson is Ford’s best-placed driver in third position, just 208 points behind championship leader Mark Skaife. With up to 288 points on offer at Winton the Ford Falcon AUXR8 driver is very much a title contender. “Queensland was a massive bonus for my championship challenge – the double points format at that event saw me take away 96 more points than Mark and his teammate Jason Bright, who’s second in the standings,” said Steve Johnson. “The entire Shell Helix Racing team is on a high, so it’s sure to be a good event for myself as well as Paul, who’s aiming to climb above fifth in the championship”. Radisich finished second overall at Winton in 2000, one place further back was Glenn Seton. Winton Raceway is one of FTR’s designated test circuits (Phillip Island being the other) and Glenn Seton is confident of using that home ground advantage during qualifying and the races. “Queensland teams dominated proceedings in qualifying at Queensland 500 and we are confident of doing the same at Winton,” said Seton. “Last year I took pole, a race win and third overall, so our team knows how to get the best from the Falcon at Winton. “A victory at Winton would provide a massive confidence boost going to Bathurst, which I’m desperate to win”. Other Ford teams set to enjoy the Winton home ground advantage are Gibson Motorsport with Craig Lowndes and Brad Jones’ OzEmail Team. Passing at Winton is tough, so qualifying and quick work in the pits will be vital. The Winton round will feature two 32-lap races with a compulsory pit stop for tyres in each race. All Ford teams and drivers will be at the Motorsports Performance Expo at the Wodonga TAFE from 6.30pm Friday September 7. Drivers will be signing autographs and official Ford Racing Australia and team merchandise will be on sale.Championship Standings after nine of 13 rounds
