13 V8s were forced to fight for seven spots on this weekend?s grid, after an over subscription for the 32 starting positions.
The top 25 qualifiers from the opening round in Adelaide automatically gained entry to this weekend?s round, for the rest it was a nail-biting 15-minute session today.
Following a wet 20-minute practice session, the pre-qualifying session was run in overcast but dry conditions.
Radisich quickly established the pace setting a time of 1:34.4755 on just his third lap.
That time would have been good enough to be the quickest in the session, but the Ford Falcon driver bettered the mark on lap six with a 1:34.1110.
?The car feels very good and I?m pleased to have set the quickest time today,? said Radisich.
?I was nervous before the session, as any small mistake could have seen us miss the races.
?I must say that I didn?t hold back and I?m now looking forward to doing more of the same tomorrow.?
A man with just as big a smile on his face was Brad Jones. The OzEmail race driver finding the groove to set the second fastest time aboard his new Falcon AUXR8.
?We took this car to Adelaide and had a horror run in qualifying, but so far this weekend it?s been on the money,? said Jones.
?The team tested twice before coming here and we?ve made some valuable gains.
?Like Paul, it?s great to get through the session and I?m sure there?s more to come over the weekend.?
Although there were plenty of happy faces to make it through the session there was three big names to miss the cut.
Ford drivers Greg Ritter (Shell Helix Racing) and VIP Pet Foods Racing?s Cameron McLean are both headed home early, while Holden driver Paul Morris will also miss the show this weekend.
Practice, qualifying and the top-10 shootout for the V8s at Phillip Island will be held tomorrow, with two 150 km championship races on Sunday.
