Ford V8 Star Extinguishes Oran Park MemoriesFord V8 Star Extinguishes Oran Park Memories

One of the most spectacular incidents of the 2000 V8 Supercar season was the start-line accident that involved Ford Falcon AUXR8 V8 Supercar driver Mark Larkham at Oran Park Raceway.

Larkham slammed into the rear of the stalled car of Paul Morris at 160 km/h causing both cars to be engulfed in a massive fire.

Both Larkham and Morris sustained some minor back injuries, but thanks to their fire proof suits, the design of the fuel systems in the cars and the fire crews at the track, neither driver suffered any burns.

This weekend Larkham will for the first time return to the Western Sydney circuit for the eighth round of the 2001 Shell V8 Championship.

As part of his preparation, Larkham joined Fire Brigades NSW for a training drill involving fire rescue, including the extinguishing of a car fire.

Larkham was given first-hand experience of fully professional fire fighting techniques - something he will hopefully not see at Oran Park over the weekend.

Larkham is part of Ford’s official 13-man line-up at Oran Park.

“Both Paul and I suffered some back injuries, but thanks to the fire proof suits, the design of the fuel systems in the cars and the fire crews at the track, we didn’t suffer any burns,” said Larkham.

“Last year’s accident won’t hold me back - a win will certainly put those memories behind me.

“I’m determined to take a win - we can’t let the other Ford teams take all the glory.

Ford has taken three wins from the seven rounds contested so far this year. Larkham is after his first win of the year and in the process extinguish memories of 2000.

Ford teams are set to be the pacesetters at the eighth round of the 2001 V8 Shell Championship Series at Sydney’s Oran Park Raceway on July 28 and 29.

Oran Park will see the championship return to pit stop racing, where each team must perform a compulsory four-tyre change in each of the 95km races.

This puts pressure on pit crews, as they try to gain valuable seconds over their competitors in the pit lane.

Ford drivers to have had success at Oran Park include; Craig Lowndes (Gibson Motorsport) victory in 1998, Glenn Seton (Ford Tickford Racing) first across the line in 1994, and 1995 winner John Bowe (Cat Racing).
