The year 2000 marked a major turning point for karting in Australia, with Ford becoming an official sponsor of the sport.
Ford Racing Australia's involvement is aimed solely at identifying talented Australian drivers and providing them with a clear and direct path, regardless of their ability to raise the significant sums of money required to compete at the top levels.
Instead of simply picking the winner of an existing series, Howard Marsden and Ford management realised that to really identify talent, a one-make class had to be created where the strength of competition relied on skill rather than money.
For 2001 the Ford Kartstars (formally Ford Max Challenge) series will include for the first time New Zealand entries and some refinements to the series.
“Inaugural winner, Michael Caruso, won his way to a drive in the 2001 Ford Australia National Formula Ford Series, while runner-up Mark Winterbottom takes to the track in the Victorian Formula Ford Series; both courtesy of Ford Racing Australia,” Howard Marsden, General Manager, Ford Racing Australia said.
“This level of commitment by Ford is bringing Australian karters’ dreams closer to reality.
“The benefits to Australian karters will be vast as Ford Racing Australia’s support is expanded in future years”.
All competitors run the same Drew Price Engineering (DPE) chassis type and the Rotax Max FR125 (cc) engines are dyno tested and then sealed, to ensure they are equal.
A control Bridgestone YGK tyre is used specifically for this Formula, and is the same tyre that was used at the World Max Challenge final and during the Ford series in 2000.
The all-inclusive entry fee for the series is just $16,500 and competitor numbers are strictly limited.
Considering the retail value of the package supplied to each driver is in excess of $14,000, the cost to compete represents fantastic value.
With in excess of $15,000 prize money, plus travel money, as well as the prize drives in Formula Ford, Ford Kartstars is a great opportunity.
The top five drivers in the 2001 Ford Kartstars series will battle it out for three major prizes. Two drivers will each receive a full season in Formula Ford and a third will undergo a racing driver's course at one of the most famous schools in the world, in the UK.
The driver selected as the winner will compete in the 2002 Ford Australia National Formula Ford Series Championship, with the runner up to contest the Victorian State series, both compliments of Ford Racing Australia.
Additional incentives for 2001 include TV coverage on the SBS Network; on-going publicity and other media related promotions.
