Ford To Take Battle To Adelaide Streets

Ford V8 Supercar teams will be after a repeat of the street racing success they enjoyed at the Melbourne Grand Prix, when round two of the 2001 Shell Championship Series hits Adelaide for the Clipsal 500 between April 6-8.

With a 250km race on both the Saturday and the Sunday, the Adelaide event is one of the toughest tests for the crews in the entire 13-round championship.

Unlike other endurance races, where driving duties are shared between two or more drivers, the battle on the streets in Adelaide is done single handedly.

Ford comes armed with a strong team which includes 1999 overall winner and 2000 race one victor Craig Lowndes (Gibson Motorsport), as well as fourth and fifth placed finishers Glenn Seton (Ford Tickford Racing) and Paul Radisich (Shell Helix Racing).

“Adelaide is one of the highlights of the V8 year,” said Craig Lowndes. “Not only is the racing fantastic, but the whole city is buzzing with excitement.

“The circuit is very demanding on brakes, tyres and the drivers themselves. A couple of years ago I had to be lifted from the car after taking victory.

“We scored second place overall at the opening round of this year’s championship at Phillip Island and it would be nice to give Ford its first overall victory in Adelaide.

Not only is there prestige in winning the Adelaide event, but as a long distance event it carries a greater amount of championship points.

“It’s only one event, but if you get it right you can put yourself in a great position to challenge for the 2001 title,” said Glenn Seton.

“That means car preparation is vital. Get things wrong and you start dropping down the order and out of the fight.

“Our form at Albert Park and Phillip Island was very strong and with the extra distance I’m confident of coming away with a nice points haul.

Radisich is the man of the moment on street circuits, with two wins from three races at this year’s non-championship Grand Prix support event at Melbourne’s Albert Park. He also holds the qualifying record set in 2000.

“Phillip Island was not as good with an 11th place, but we will be back at the head of the pack in Adelaide,” said Radisich.

“With the circuit lined with concrete barriers there’s no room for mistakes, but I’ll be no less aggressive than I was at Albert Park.

“I expect to see some teams come away with plenty of damage. The best way to avoid all that is to be out in front.

To add to the excitement, the Adelaide event will feature a Top-15 Shootout, as well as a separate compulsory four-tyre and fuel stop in each of the twin 250 km races.

Ford will field twelve factory-supported drivers in nine teams in Adelaide. These drivers are:

Craig Lowndes - Gibson Motorsport #00
Marcos Ambrose - Pirtek Racing #4
Glenn Seton - Ford Tickford Racing #5
Steve Richards - Ford Tickford Racing #6
David Besnard - Caltex Havoline Racing #9
Mark Larkham - ICS Ford Team Smartcar #10
