Ford Teams Set for Street Fight at Grand Prix

Staff, Wednesday February 28, 2001.

Ford will go into battle for the 2001 motor racing season with its strongest ever line-up when the Hot Wheels V8 Supercar Showdown kicks off the year at the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park March 2-4.

New Ford recruit Craig Lowndes will take to the track for the very first time in a Falcon when he debuts his new Gibson Motorsport racer at the Grand Prix, while established Ford star Paul Radisich will be looking to further his reputation as one of Australia’s leading street-track racers on the high-speed Albert Park course. Although not part of the 2001 Shell Championship Series, the three ten-lap races over the Grand Prix weekend will be the first hitout for the V8s since Bathurst last November. And while all the Ford Racing teams have been busy during the off-season, none more so than Gibson Motorsport, which has switched allegiance to the Blue Oval along with Lowndes. “The Grand Prix weekend will give me a great opportunity to get the feel of the Falcon in full race conditions, without the pressure of the championship,” Craig Lowndes says. “We have had only limited preparation time, of course, and will go to the first race with very little testing, but the professionalism of the Gibson team means that I’m sure we’ll have a strong package for the three races.” Shell Helix Racing’s Paul Radisich was V8 Supercar’s most consistent driver on street circuits in 2000, winning the Gold Coast Indy event as well as coming third overall at last year’s Grand Prix. Renown as one of the sports’ toughest competitors, Radisich will settle for nothing less than a clean-sweep of the Hot Wheels V8 Supercar Showdown. “For a street circuit Albert Park is relatively fast, but passing can be a problem so grid position is vital,” says Paul Radisich. “Of course the atmosphere is fantastic in Melbourne and although it’s not a championship round, a win there would be very rewarding in front of so many enthusiastic spectators.” Ford Racing is making its biggest commitment yet for season 2001, allocating greater resources and funding than ever before for its factory-supported teams and their Falcon XR8s. Stone Brothers Racing has two new drivers in young chargers David Besnard (Caltex Havoline Racing) and Marcos Ambrose (Pirtek Racing), while Ford Tickford Racing (FTR) welcomes two-time Bathurst winner Steve Richards to the 2001 line-up, alongside Glenn Seton. The official Ford Racing family for 2001 is completed by John Bowe (Cat Racing), Steven Johnson (Shell Helix Racing), Brad Jones (Ozemail Internet Racing), Mark Larkham (Larkham Motorsport), Steve Ellery (Supercheap Auto Racing) and Paul Weel (K & J Thermal Racing). “Without doubt Ford has its best-ever chance for success in V8 Supercar racing in 2001 and we are all very excited that our hard work in putting together such a strong program has paid off,” Howard Marsden, General Manager Ford Racing, says. “Victory at the Grand Prix would be the perfect way to start the year and give all the Ford teams a great deal of confidence going to the first championship round at Phillip Island in late March.”

The race program for the Hot Wheels V8 Supercar Showdown at Albert Park is as follows:

Race One 4:10pm Friday 2 March 10 laps
Race Two 2:20pm Saturday 3 March 10 laps
Race Three 10:37am Sunday 4 March 10 laps
