Phillip Island marks the first appearance for the V8s at a permanent racing circuit in 2002. The first two events of the year, the non-championship Grand Prix support event in Melbourne and the Clipsal 500, both run on street circuits.
Celebrating its 40th year, Phillip Island is Australia?s fastest race circuit with top speeds of around 270 km/h and a lap average of 160 km/h.
To give themselves the best chance at the ?power-track?, all teams have tested extensively since Adelaide, with a number of crews using two days to fine-tune their Ford Falcon AUXR8 supercars.
In 2001 Craig Lowndes was Ford?s top driver at Phillip Island with second place overall.
?Phillip Island is a vast contrast to Adelaide, with no concrete barriers lining the track and lots of fast and flowing high-speed corners,? said the 00 Motorsport driver.
?Like all the Ford teams we have spent time since Adelaide making improvements to the car.
?Adelaide gave us a lot of information both on the car, and the new Dunlop control tyre that everyone is using in 2002.
?I?m confident that we can be part of the fight for victory at Phillip Island and I know that the other Ford teams will provide plenty of stiff opposition as well.?
Phillip Island has one of the most picturesque outlooks of any circuit, with direct views to the Bass Straight. This also means the track can be prone to cold and often wet weather.
A driver who has experienced everything Phillip Island can offer is Glenn Seton, who?s taken three round wins as well as three pole positions.
?It?s a fantastic driver?s circuit with plenty of great viewing areas for race fans,? said Seton.
?The weather is usually the biggest obstacle. Last year we had overcast conditions and rain in practice but clear sunny skies for the races. It would be nice to have clear conditions for both days in 2002.
?The twin 150 kilometre races once again include pit stops, and with the track set to be quite abrasive on the tyres, picking the right time to change will be critical in deciding who comes out on top.
Friday is set to provide plenty of drama with a number of leading drivers set to take part in pre-qualifying for the weekend.
Due to the outstanding quality of the V8 Championship in 2002, 13 drivers will fight for seven spots on the grid. These include Shell Helix Racing duo Paul Radisich and Greg Ritter, as well as Cameron McLean (VIP Pet Foods Racing) and Paul Weel (K & J Thermal Products Racing).
